Upcoming Event

The growing field of integration science applies expertise across disciplines to bridge fundamental gaps in traditional, disease-specific approaches to global health. Through the application of methodologies from public policy, management science, economics, social medicine, and philanthropy science, participants in the Third Symposium on Integration Science will engage with and explore new approaches and pathways to improve health outcomes worldwide.

Fireside Chat with Dr. Una Osili and Dr. Gene Bukhman

Dr. Osili will highlight fresh approaches to engaging philanthropy with effective global health interventions. She will also explore strategies that leaders can use to spur sustainable systems change through community-building, drawing from research on enabling environments for philanthropy.

Each panel will last approximately 50 minutes and be followed by a musical interlude and brief coffee break

Panel 1: Integration in Action: Stories from Implementers
Panelists will explore and explain from their own experience the downstream impact of traditional vertical global health paradigms and financing mechanisms at the point of patient care. This session will set the stage for deeper exploration into delivery model design and social movement design, both of which will be tackled in following two panels.

Panel 2: Designing for Integration
Panelists will discuss delivery model design approaches and tools that can yield better outcomes for patients, and more efficient use of limited resources, through intentional operational mapping. Panelists will also explore how a structured understanding of care delivery informs the design of models that can achieve better patient outcomes or reach more patients with minimal additional investment, with implications for design of more effective financing structures and incentives.

Panel 3: Identity and Power
Panelists will transition to outside the clinic, considering how health systems and identity influence each other and how shared identities can create the power to shift systems toward global health equity. How can global health practitioners and academics authentically foster new connections across existing disease identities that have the power to drive change?

Closing Keynote

4:00–4:30 pm

Fireside Chat with Dr. Sania Nishtar and Dr. Gene Bukhman
Dr. Nishtar will pull the conversation with the audience into a global frame, drawing on her leadership experiences with the government of Pakistan, Heartfile, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance to share her perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing the global health community as it reorganizes in response to a shifting political reality.

Dr. Sania Nishtar

Chief Executive Officer of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance

Dr. Sania Nishtar joined Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance as Chief Executive Officer in 2024. A trained medical doctor and a national and global leader for more than 30 years, she has served as a Senator in her home country of Pakistan, as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Social Protection and Poverty Alleviation, and as a Federal Minister with responsibility for re-establishing Pakistan’s Ministry of Health. Dr. Nishtar has also fulfilled several leadership positions in civil society and international organizations; founded a nonprofit health reform think tank in Pakistan; coauthored dozens of academic papers and books; and published in leading newspapers. A graduate of Khyber Medical College and King’s College London, she has received many international awards and honors, including, in 2020, being named among the 100 most inspiring and influential women around the world by the BBC.

At Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, Dr. Una Osili serves as both the Associate Dean for Research and International Programs and the Efroymson Chair in Philanthropy and Economics. She is also Executive Director of Philanthropy, Strategy, and Operations for the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation. Dr. Osili has served as a member of several national and international advisory groups, including the African Development Bank, the Social Science Research Council, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and the United Nations Development Program. She earned her bachelor’s degree in economics at Harvard University and her master’s and doctorate at Northwestern University.

Gene Bukhman

Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School

Co-Chair, NCDI Poverty Network

Dr. Gene Bukhman is the Executive Director of the Center for Integration Science in Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is also a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a cardiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Bukhman was the lead author and Co-Chair of the 2016–2020 Lancet Commission on Reframing NCDs and Injuries for the Poorest Billion, and he now serves as Co-Chair of the NCDI Poverty Network. In 2023, he received the World Heart Federation Award for Outstanding Contribution to Global Cardiovascular Health. He is currently leading the Lancet Series on Integration Science for Global Health Equity. Dr. Bukhman holds a doctorate in cultural anthropology in addition to his medical degree.
